Meaning: Learning is affected by a combination of factors within the learner, in the environment and in the task itself. Understanding these helps the teacher create favourable conditions.

Meaning: Flanders' Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS), developed by Ned A. Flanders, is a system to observe and analyse the verbal interaction between teacher and pupils in the classroom.

  • It uses ten categories of verbal behaviour. Teacher Talk: (1) accepts feelings, (2) praises or encourages, (3) accepts or uses ideas of pupils, (4) asks questions, (5) lecturing, (6) giving directions, (7) criticising or justifying authority.
  • Pupil Talk: (8) pupil talk—response, (9) pupil talk—initiation; and (10) silence or confusion.
  • Categories 1–4 show indirect teacher influence, while 5–7 show direct influence.
  • Classroom behaviour is recorded every 3 seconds and plotted in a 10×10 interaction matrix.
