Meaning: The elements of learning are the essential factors that must operate together for learning to take place. Learning is the interaction of three broad components — the learner, the learning process and the learning situation.

  • Goal: the object that satisfies the motive — clear goals give learning direction.
  • Readiness: the mental and physical preparedness to learn — teach only when the child is ready.
  • Maturation: the level of natural development — content must suit the learner's stage.
  • Learning situation: the stimuli and environment provided — arrange a rich, favourable setting.
  • Response: the learner's active reaction to the situation.
  • Reinforcement and feedback: reward and knowledge of results strengthen and correct learning.

3Write the definition of teaching and explain its characteristics.

Meaning: Teaching is the arrangement of situations, activities and interaction that facilitate and bring about learning. B.O. Smith defined it as "a system of actions intended to produce learning", and Amidon called it "a process of interaction". It is a tripolar process involving the teacher, the pupil and the content.

  • Good teaching is planned and purposeful, directed towards clear objectives.

Meaning: E.L. Thorndike, on the basis of his trial-and-error experiments, formulated three primary laws of learning that describe the conditions under which stimulus–response bonds are strengthened or weakened.

  • Law of Readiness: learning occurs best when the learner is mentally and physically prepared to act; forcing an unready learner causes annoyance.
  • Law of Exercise: connections are strengthened through use (practice) and weakened through disuse — the laws of use and disuse.
  • Law of Effect: responses followed by a satisfying state of affairs are stamped in, while those followed by an annoying state are stamped out.

Meaning: Maxims of teaching are universally accepted, practical rules or guidelines that help the teacher proceed in a natural, psychological and effective way. They move the learner smoothly from the familiar towards the new.

  • From simple to complex: introduce easy ideas before difficult ones.
  • From concrete to abstract: start with real objects, then reach abstract ideas.
  • From particular to general: build general rules from specific examples.

Meaning: A diverse classroom is a class whose learners differ from one another in ability and intelligence, socio-economic status, language, culture, religion, gender, learning styles and special needs. No two learners are alike, so the teacher must plan for variety.

Meaning: B.F. Skinner propounded operant conditioning, a behaviourist theory holding that behaviour is shaped by its consequences. Using the Skinner box, he showed that an organism operates on its environment and its actions are strengthened or weakened by what follows.

  • Reinforcement (positive or negative) strengthens a response, while punishment weakens it.
  • Schedules of reinforcement control how and when reinforcers are given.

  • An unconditioned stimulus (UCS) naturally produces an unconditioned response (UCR) — food causing salivation.
  • A neutral stimulus (bell) paired with food becomes a conditioned stimulus (CS) producing a conditioned response (CR).

Meaning: E.L. Thorndike proposed trial-and-error learning, also called Connectionism or the theory of the S–R bond. Learning, he held, is the stamping-in of a connection between a stimulus and a response through repeated trials.

  • In his experiment a hungry cat in a puzzle box tried many random movements to escape and reach food.
  • With repeated trials, useless movements were eliminated and the correct response was fixed.
  • Learning thus proceeds by selecting and connecting the right response to the situation.
